In 2018, former Governor Cuomo announced that Lake Placid was selected to host the 2023 World University Games. New York State is proud to be hosting these games and looks forward to showcasing New York and the North Country to an international audience.
Who is eligible for World University Games?
1 In order to be considered for Selection to the Team, an athlete must, at the beginning of the Qualifying Competition: (a) be a registered athlete member of USA Swimming in good standing; (b) be a citizen of the United States; and (c) be eligible to represent the United States in the Championships.

The 31st Winter Universiade in 2023 will return the FISU Flame to North American soil for the first time since nearby city Buffalo hosted the Summer Universiade in 1993 . This marks the first time the Winter Universiade returns to a former host city as Lake Placid held the event in 1972.

All athletes must satisfy the following conditions: a) Be a national of the country they represent; b) Be at least 18 and no older than 25 years of age on the 31st December of the year of the event, for 2022, athletes must be born between the 01/01/1997 and the 31/12/2004.
How can I join FISU?
All sports that are/want to be part of a specific FISU event must first be a recognised sport. Any FISU recognised sport may apply to FISU for endorsement of its events. FISU reserves the right, at its own discretion, to deem a recognised sport as eligible for inclusion in a FISU sport property or event.
