What is the purpose of a saline flush?
A saline flush is a mixture of salt and water that is compatible with your body’s fluids and tissues. It is used to push any residual medication or fluid through the IV line and into your vein. This keeps the PIV line clean and reduces the risk of infection or occlusion.
How long does saline flush last?
o If multi-dose vials are used to prepare saline flush syringes, they must be dated upon opening and discarded within 28 days unless the manufacturer specifies a different date for that vial. The beyond-use date should never exceed the manufacturer’s expiration date.
Can you get sick from saline solution?

McKesson Med Stream normal saline prefilled flush syringes are available in different volumes. They contain a sterile, non-pyrogenic, aqueous isotonic solution of sodium chloride. They do not contain preservatives.
