It may work without the ground because there is a ground wire to the ecu from the engine harness, but it should be grounded. Anywhere on the chassis would be fine.
Where does the ECU get power from?
The base of the transistor is a keyed 12 volt source. The collector is connected to the one end of the ECU power relay coil, with the other end being connected to +12V. When the key is turned on the transistor conducts, energizing the relay and supplying power to the ECU.

Re: adding gps on ic7 Wired in the Haltech gps and it was effectively plug and play. You have to make sure the proper box is checked when reprogramming but nothing special. The GPS speed was pretty smooth and responsive. Overall I’m very pleased with my I -7 with all the recent updates.
