Is the butterfly exhibit open at the Milwaukee Public Museum?
The butterfly wing at the Milwaukee Public Museum reopens with new interactive elements and COVID-19 protocols. The butterflies are back. Starting Thursday, the Milwaukee Public Museum is reopening its popular Puelicher Butterfly Wing, which has been closed since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The current museum will remain open throughout much of the time that the new museum is being built. There will likely be a brief period of time once construction wraps up in 2026 when both museums are closed to the public as we finish moving from one building to the other.

Allow an entire afternoon to get through it. I don’t know where to begin…the whole museum is amazing and kind of a time travel experience. Quite a lot of the exhibits are very modern but there are some original gems there from the 60s and 70s that show their age in a charming way.

Milwaukee County owns the building that the Museum is located in as well as the more-than 4 million objects and specimens in MPM’s collections.
What is happening to Milwaukee Public Museum?
On Tuesday, the Milwaukee County Board approved $45 million in borrowing for the project. The new building will tentatively open in 2026 although the museum said on Facebook that it will remain at its current location until the move. At that point, the museum will be renamed the Wisconsin Museum of Nature and Culture.
