When it is getting snow, this mountain is as good as anywhere in New England. This statistic isn’t easily quantified, but it would easy to argue that Cannon is the most consistently steep ski resort in New England. This brutally cold and cloudy mountain has a reputation for being icy and generally unpleasant.

It’s not just the slew of steep descents — Cannon’s 2,300 vertical feet makes it the steepest in the state, while toughening local boy and U.S. Ski Team and Olympic racing superstar, Bode Miller, when he was growing up here — but also the mountain’s location at the base of the western flanks of Mount Washington.
Why is Cannon Mountain called Cannon Mountain?
In 1972 Cannon Mountain, named after a rock formation on the southeast side of the mountain that looks like a cannon, became the official name. The most significant piece of Cannon Mountain history is the Old Man of the Mountain profile (above).
