On Thursday, June 15, Ford revealed the horsepower and torque of its 2018 Ford F-150 pickup and the 2018 Ford Expedition SUV. The company also unveiled an off-road package for its Expedition.
From the announcement, it was clear that Ford has not only worked toward increasing the power of both the vehicles, but also making them lighter. The weight of both the 2018 Ford F-150 and the 2018 Ford Expedition have been reduced mainly due to the all-aluminum body that the vehicles will sport. Increased efficiency when it comes to transmission has allowed the company to increase the horsepower in the refreshed F-150 and the Expedition.
The Refreshed 2018 Ford F-150
The 2018 Ford F-150 sports a 3.3-liter V6 engine, which can produce 290 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. The vehicle exerts 265 pound-feet torque at 2,750 rpm. By comparison, the 2017 Ford F-150 produced 282 horsepower and had a torque of 253 pound-feet. It also had a larger 3.7-liter V6 engine.
The new engine of the 2018 model features direct injection and dual port, while the engine in the 2017 version sported port injection. The refreshed F-150 will come with six-speed automatic transmission.
The second generation 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 engine also sports a dual port and direct injection, which takes the power to 325-horsepower at 5,000 rpm and produces a 400 pound-feet torque at 2,750 rpm. For this engine, the torque has increased 25 pound-feet vis-à-vis the 2017 version, while the horsepower output remains the same.
The 5-liter V8 engine will get 395 horsepower at 5,750 rpm, which is 10 horsepower more than its 2017 counterpart, and 400 pound-feet of torque at 3,850 rpm. The 2017 Ford F-150 model, on the other hand, produced 387 pound-feet of torque.
Ford revealed that there would be no change in power and torque output for the 3.5-liter high-output EcoBoost or the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engines. However, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost, 5-liter V8, and 3.5-liter EcoBoost will now all get 10-speed transmissions. It was only available for the 3.5-liter EcoBoost after the 10-speed transmissions’ release.
Ford said that it will also offer a 3-liter PowerStroke diesel engine option to its customers. However, the company did not reveal the specs of this engine. The non-diesel 2018 Ford F-150s will be available this fall, while the diesel variant would be available by summer of 2018.
2018 Ford Expedition
The 2018 Ford Expedition will house the same 3.5-liter V6 engine that the 2018 F-150 will come with. The only major difference is that the SUV will now feature 10-speed transmission. Design wise, the new aluminum body of the vehicle allows the 2018 Ford Expedition to be 300 pounds lighter.
The Expedition’s Limited, XL, and XLT variants will each get 375 horsepower at 5,000 rpm, whereas the 2017 models got 365 horsepower. Torque-wise, the vehicle will produce 470 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm, which is 40 pound-feet more than its predecessor.
The Platinum trim, on the other hand, will get 400 horsepower, which is 35 more than its earlier 365 horsepower output. The outgoing model exerted 420 pound-feet of torque, while the new model exerts 480 pound-feet at 3,250 rpm.
Ford also revealed that it would offer an off-road package for the XLT trim of the 2018 Expedition after customers consistently demanded the same. The off-road variant will get the same 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque as the standard XLT trim of the 2018 Ford Expedition.
