Recently we had published a story on information of over 20,000 FBI employees and 10,000 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employees getting leaked in a hack. The arrest has now been made. Surprisingly enough it wasn’t a terror group or a hacker firm which was behind these hacks, but the hacker has been traced down to be a 16 year old boy in England. The teen, whose name has not been revealed had also broken into the accounts of the CIA Director and the DHS Chief.
It has been confirmed from reports via Fox News that the arrest was made by the British authorities working with the American FBI. The authorities are now looking for others who might have been involved in the act. Over the last few month this teen (and possibly his accomplices) have been releasing a large amount of private data on the internet.
Though it hasn’t been clarified yet, the teen is suspected to be the ‘leader’ of the group of hackers called Crackas with Attitude (CWA). Popular website Motherboard received information from an unknown hacker that he had accessed the data through a US DoJ e-mail account. He has claimed to have stolen over 1 Terabyte of data. Out of this, over 200GB of data is expected to have critical information like credit card details and military emails.
Peter Carr, a spokesman for the Justice Department, said, “The department is looking into the unauthorized access of a system operated by one of its components containing employee contact information.”
This was indeed a major breach of security for America’s leading organizations, and this is a major setback, as it makes the public at large feel insecure that if their leading agencies can be broken in by 16 year olds, how safe is their information!
