Google and Huawei may soon face a class-action lawsuit over the issues that users have reported regarding the Nexus 6P smartphone.
Users have pointed out two major problems with the Nexus 6P, namely early shutdowns wherein the device powers off prematurely, and boot loops wherein the smartphone repeatedly restarts without ever fully booting into Android.
Nexus 6P Early Shutdown Issue
After receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update late last year, Nexus 6P owners started reporting battery issues with the smartphone. There were a significant number of cases wherein the smartphone powered off even if the battery still had a significant charge, ranging from 10 percent to 60 percent.
Google, meanwhile, labeled the problem as a low priority issue, and then issued a dismissive solution of requiring affected owners to contact Google Store Support. Users who were able to roll back their Nexus 6P from Android 7.0 Nougat to Android 6.0 Marshmallow still experienced the problem.
Nexus 6P Bootloop Issue
The other problem that Nexus 6P owners have faced is boot loop issues that started happening upon upgrading to Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Affected users will find their smartphone stuck on the boot screen. Neither rolling back the operating system to a lower version of Android nor reverting the device to its factory state have fixed the problem.
Google, similar to the early shutdown issue, has not been able to provide an acceptable solution to the problem. Owners of the LG-made Nexus 5X, which was launched alongside the Nexus 6P, are also experiencing the boot loop problem.
Potential Nexus 6P Class-Action Lawsuit Against Google, Huawei
United States law firm Chimicles & Tikellis LLP, in a statement posted on its website, said that it is now investigating a possible class-action lawsuit against Google and Huawei over the two reported problems for the Nexus 6P.
C&T claimed that there is no indication that a fix is on its way for the early shutdown problem of the Nexus 6P, and that users who tried to avail of a warranty from Huawei were turned away as the smartphone manufacturer claims that the issue is with the software of Google.
For the boot loop issue, C&T said that the instances of the situation point to a possible hardware issue in the Nexus 6P. Users have been told by Google to request for warranty coverage from Huawei, but the smartphone manufacturer has not granted such services.
Users who have experienced either one of these two Nexus 6P issues are requested by C&T to fill out the form attached to its statement. The form requests for information such as the affected users’ names, contact information, time having owned the Nexus 6P, and details on any attempts to obtain warranty coverage.
Will The Lawsuit Help Troubled Nexus 6P Owners?
The class-action lawsuit, if it pushes through, might pressure Google and Huawei to take responsibility for the ongoing problems of the Nexus 6P. However, there are some customers who are skeptical that there is something that would actually be done, as Google has since moved on to focus on its Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones and Huawei has rolled out many other devices.
