Americans are now projecting a very unhealthy food choice because they fail to include fresh fruits and vegetables in their meals. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that Americans should try to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables daily due to the fact that 80% of the population do not follow the healthy advice.
It is a well-known fact that fresh fruits and vegetables imparts greatly in keeping good health and right weight with regular diet and exercise. Higher fiber and balanced diet helps keep people away from illnesses.
The data for the study was collected by the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System that includes 373,000 American adults in 50 states from 2007 to 2010. They were asked to answer a survey question mostly about how much fruit and vegetable they include in their meals.
Their findings revealed that 76% of Americans fail to intake the recommended amount of fruits, and 87% fail to eat vegetables. And the results vary every state.
The CDC found out that Tennessee and Mississippi are the two worst performing states where only 7.5% of its citizens eat the recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables and 5.5% of its citizens follow the recommended healthy diet, respectively.
CDC recommends five fruit and vegetable servings per day, which is enough to ward off mild to serious illnesses like cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other minor diseases.
Moreover, fruits and vegetable help individuals to keep a healthy weight as it contains more proteins and fiber that help the metabolism function better. It also carries many important nutrients that the body needs to function well every day.
Prof. Marion Nestle of the New York University said, “Substantial new efforts are needed to build consumer demand for fruits and vegetables through competitive pricing, placement, and promotion in child care, schools, grocery stores, communities, and worksites.”
Unfortunately, healthy food choice is not the only issue Americans should fix. They are also asked to engage into physical activity. Many health organizations promote regular exercise and healthy diet to improve the lifestyle of Americans. First Lady Michelle Obama also made her part by actively encouraging American kids to do physical activity and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.
The growing unhealthy trend seems to have originated from the popularity of ready-to-eat packed food items and fast food. But the problem is that Americans forget that they also need to include fresh items to their diet for a healthier body that will benefit them in the long run.
