Bed Bugs Attracted To Dirty Clothes: Study

Researchers in a latest study have found out that bed bugs are attracted to dirty clothes, which means that it is likely that if you have dirty laundry lying around for long, bed bugs may turn up at the place.

British researchers from the University of Sheffield have advised that if people want bed bugs to stay away, they should frequently wash their clothes. The researchers said that leaving dirty laundry exposed in bedrooms while travelling could lead to bed bugs infestation.

The study also concluded that the blood-sucking bed bugs are not just attracted to humans but also the smell of humans. Unwashed clothes also carry the smell of humans, which is one of the reasons they can be found near dirty clothes.

Commenting on the findings of the research, lead author of the study William Hentley said, “There are a lot of good studies out there focused on trying to understand how bed bugs are attracted to humans and how they get around apartment blocks, but no one has really talked about how they get into the house in the first place.”

In order to reach the findings, the researchers tested two identical rooms, both go which had a bed, a pile of dirty clothes and a pile of clean clothes in it. Reports state that the researchers pumped carbon dioxide in one room to stimulate a human breathing.

The researchers concluded that bed bugs were most likely to be found in a room if they sensed a human nearby. However, in the absence of a human, they were twice as likely to settle on dirty clots than on the clean ones.

“Once a room is infested with bed bugs, they can be very difficult to get rid of, which can result in people having to dispose of clothes and furniture that can be really costly,” Dr. Hentley added. “Bed bugs are a huge problem for hotel and homeowners, particularly in some of the world’s biggest and busiest cities.”
